Unique & Handmade
Pottery
For the production process of our pottery accessories, we take you to Indonesia. West Java, to be precise. Here, the accessories are handcrafted by local artisans using traditional methods and a mixture of Javanese clay and sand.
Traditional craftsmanship
Javanese clay is carefully mixed with sand to achieve the right consistency. Sometimes an iron spindle press is used to firmly compress the clay. The clay is then shaped, turned and cut entirely by hand. After this, nature takes over: the pottery is left to air-dry outdoors for approximately one week. Once sufficiently dry, the pieces are smoothed by sanding to remove loose particles and imperfections.
The firing process then begins. For this, onion-shaped kilns are built from bricks. All pottery is stacked inside these simple kilns. The kiln entrance has no door and is sealed by hand with bricks. The kiln operates for 16 hours at temperatures between 900 and 1,000°C. Once fired, the sealed entrance is broken open to remove the pieces. A new kiln is built for each production run. The fired pieces are sanded once more so the surfaces are smooth enough for painting and decoration. Sometimes a leather or rattan handle is added to a lantern or flower pot. Due to all this handcrafted work, no two items are exactly alike. Each piece features its own unique details.
Why we love it
Each accessory is shaped by hand by skilled artisans in West Java. This results in subtle variations, ensuring that no two items are the same. The result is a unique accessory, authentic, full of character and truly handcrafted. A genuine work of art for the home.
