Glassware
Glass is a widely used material in our accessories. The vast majority of the glass in our collection is mouth-blown, a fascinating and highly captivating process. We visited the glass factory of one of our suppliers and are happy to take you behind the scenes.
The process
The basic ingredients of glass are sand, soda and recycled glass shards. These are mixed and then heated in a large furnace at 1,300°C until the mixture becomes molten. The glassblower gathers a lump of molten glass on a blowpipe. He lowers the liquid glass into a mould and blows it against the inner wall of the mould.
For a wine glass, for example, a long stem is drawn from the lower part. The round base is blown separately and fused onto the stem. The top of the bowl initially comes out of the mould closed and is then ‘cut’ open with a hot flame, known as a hot cut.
The glass is measured and cleaned one final time before a decal or transfer is applied. This is done with great precision, as the design must be placed in exactly the same position on each item. The pieces then return to the oven for three hours at 500°C on a conveyor system.
The hot glass, still at 500°C, is then transferred to a cooling oven, where it slowly cools down over a period of three hours. A final inspection checks for any major imperfections and ensures the item is stable. If necessary, the glass is polished so it stands perfectly. The end result is true craftsmanship and deserves a beautiful place in your interior.
Why we love it
Every glassblower has their own signature. As a result, each accessory has its own structure and may feature small irregularities, such as a tiny air bubble or slight differences in height. True unique pieces, beautiful craftsmanship that is perfectly imperfect.
