During the rainy season, vines measuring five to six metres in length are harvested. The rattan is then placed in mud baths for several weeks, giving it its characteristic grey tone. After this process, the strands are carefully selected by colour and thickness and handcrafted into furniture and accessories. In small Javanese villages, the rattan is further woven. An impressive sight: entire villages filled with rattan for the upcoming Rivièra Maison collection of the new season.

Colouring rattan using natural materials makes it nearly impossible to achieve perfectly uniform shades. The weaving itself is never the same either. This craftsmanship is carried out by the Javanese community, with each village having its own specialism and technique. Every product is therefore 100% handmade, with no machinery involved. The number of hours of craftsmanship required per item is hard to imagine, but it is precisely this that makes each piece truly unique and full of character.
