A look inside the home of …
Nico Tijsen
For this hometour, we step into the home of Nico Tijsen, better known as Nicolicious, the creative force behind Rivièra Maison. In his characterful loft, located on the top floor of a former retail building dating back to 1918, atmosphere, personality and styling come together beautifully. Authentic details, stunning waterfront views and sun-filled corners create the setting for an interior that truly reflects Nico’s personality.
With more than thirty years of experience in interior styling, Nico knows exactly how to bring a home to life. His style? A rich blend of natural tones, soft fabrics, personal souvenirs and special accessories with a story. Modern furniture is effortlessly combined with heirlooms, holiday finds and stylish details, giving every room warmth and character. At Nico’s home there is only one rule: more is definitely more.
“After living in Amsterdam for many years, I moved a few years ago to an amazing loft apartment. I am still just as in love with the house as I was the day I bought it. The beautiful views over the water create a painterly effect that I enjoy every single day.”
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS
Soft and light tones dominate Nico’s spacious loft, making the apartment feel even larger. He chose many upholstered furniture pieces, balanced by a sleek kitchen and dining area to maintain a calm atmosphere. That balance is important, because Nico – the king of decoration – has fully embraced accessories throughout his stunning loft. There is always something new to discover in Nico’s home. Every detail has been carefully styled, from the beautiful black-and-white frames on the wall to the box filled with personal memories placed on top of coffee table books. The accessories form a perfect mix of travel finds, decorative treasures, new pieces and personal heirlooms.
EVERYTHING IN BALANCE
What makes Nico’s style so recognisable is his love for natural materials, craftsmanship and tranquillity. Greenery, flowers, linen fabrics and authentic woodwork play a central role in his interior, creating a warm and serene atmosphere. His eye for detail and appreciation for craftsmanship can be seen in every room, yet everything remains perfectly balanced. Because of his busy lifestyle, Nico consciously chooses calmness and comfort at home: a place where he can truly unwind.
BEDROOM AS A SECOND LIVING ROOM
Nico’s favourite place in the house is his bedroom. “The bedroom and bathroom are really the places where you can retreat and relax. You spend so many hours a day in your bedroom that I see it as a second living room. My bedroom is truly my sanctuary. I always call it a little bonbon box, my mini cocoon where I can completely unwind after a busy workday.”
Nico’s bedroom is a harmonious blend of comfort, style and functionality. Natural materials and soft tones create a serene atmosphere. The bathroom is also designed as an oasis of calm. Walls finished in microcement, combined with white towels and wash basins, create a luxurious wellness feeling.
THE KITCHEN AS THE HEART OF THE HOME
The kitchen is the heart of Nico’s home. Thanks to the large kitchen island, the space is naturally divided between the seating area by the sliding doors and the dining area by the window. It is a warm and inviting place where guests naturally gather. “I’m definitely not a master chef, but for some reason during every party my kitchen is always full of guests. Drinks, snacks: the kitchen is simply the place to be.”
Nicolicious styling tips
CALM FOUNDATION
A neutral base colour creates a sense of calm.
SPACIOUS EFFECT
Place sofas and tables away from the walls whenever possible. This creates a more spacious feeling in the room.
RUG AS A CONNECTING ELEMENT
A rug visually connects the furniture in the seating area and brings everything together as one harmonious whole.
BLACK-AND-WHITE FRAMES
A collection of black-and-white photo frames is a timeless classic. You can never go wrong with it.
ROOM WITH A VIEW
See a window with a view as a painting. Keep the surroundings calm so all attention goes to the view. My window frames are painted black, making them function like a picture frame around the scenery.
GROUPING ACCESSORIES
Too many loose accessories can quickly feel cluttered. Display souvenirs and perfume bottles together in a glass box or under a cloche. It looks organised while instantly creating a beautiful eye-catcher, almost like a mini museum.
