1948: Rivièra Bloemsierkunst florist shop opens
Shortly after WWII ends, Jacques and Dini Teunissen open a florist shop on the Overtoom boulevard in Amsterdam on 1 March 1948. They name their shop ‘Rivièra Bloemsierkunst’, after the northern coastal region of Italy bordering France, better known as the Flower Rivièra.
The Teunissens transform their shop into a prominent flower retailer specialising in bridal bouquets. They are commissioned to supply the flower decorations in honour of the 25th wedding anniversary of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in the prestigious Amstel Hotel.
1960: New branch opens in Maasstraat
The Teunissens open a second shop in Maasstraat, a street in the chique Amsterdam South district.
1975: Son Henk Teunissen joins the firmON HENK TEUNISSEN JOINS THE FIRM
In 1975, Henk joins his parents’ company and begins devoting his attention to the corporate market. Rivièra Bloemsierkunst supplies flowers to many leading companies.
1985: Hrenstraat shop opens & home decorations launch
Henk Teunissen takes over the company. He buys a container-load of Asian pots while on holiday in Malaysia; the pots are an instant retail success. This marks the start of home decorations in the stores.1989: NICO TIJSEN ENTERS THE SCENE
Nico Tijsen, currently Creative Director, joins the company.
1993: Store in Haarlem opens
A store opened in downtown Haarlem, presenting the first line of furniture.
1997: Kalvertoren Store opens, name changes
The first store opens in Amsterdam’s Kalvertoren, an indoor shopping centre. The company’s name is officially changed to Rivièra Maison. The store offers a complete range of home and garden furniture and accessories. The distinctive Rivièra Maison atmosphere is fully expressed here: timeless and comfortable with a dash of elegance. The pace picks up after the Kalvertoren store opens, with new stores opening across the Netherlands.
2003: Expanding across borders
By this time, Rivièra Maison has quite a few stores of its own, as well as a successful network of dealers in the Netherlands and abroad. In January 2003, Rivièra Maison has its first stand at the Maison et Objet trade fair, the leading interior design event in Paris. The collection is a smash hit worldwide.
2006: Nominations lead to international award
Rivièra Maison is nominated for not one but four awards in 2006: the Annual Visa Retail Award, the Sanoma Woonawards for home decoration, the professional retail jury award for ‘Best Home Decoration Chain in the Netherlands’, and the international Global Innovation Award. Rivièra Maison is proud to accept the GIA trophy at the ceremony in Chicago.
2007: Concept Store opens in Van Baerlestraat, first RM Magazine
The chain’s flagship and its pride and joy opens in Amsterdam’s prestigious Van Baerlestraat. The Concept Store is the only branch in the Netherlands that offers valet parking. That same year, the RM brochure is transformed into a fully-fledged magazine packed with information about the new collection, shopping routes, interviews, home makeovers and styling tips. Four issues are published a year, timed to coincide with the seasons and the release of the seasonal collections.
2008: Voted 'Best Chain Store in The Netherlands'
Rivièra Maison wins the country’s most acclaimed retail award: Best Chain Store in the Netherlands. The jury report praises the impressive, powerful overall concept: “As a brand with a vision, Rivièra Maison plays a pioneering role in the Dutch retail sector in lifestyle, inspiration and ambiance.”
2009: International growth & alliances
The first Flagship Store opens in Germany on Neuer Wall, Hamburg’s most prestigious shopping street. That same year marks Rivièra Maison’s first forays into Norway, with two large Rivièra Maison Stores openings, including a branch in the city of Bergen.
2010: Fromd home interior store to lifestyle brand
The products sold in the stores offer more than simply furniture and accessories to create a stylish interior; Rivièra Maison doesn’t just sell a dining room table, it sells ‘dinner with friends’. The total lifestyle concept is widely embraced in the Netherlands and abroad. Rivièra Maison has attained the status of a lifestyle brand. The highlights in 2010 and beyond confirm this trend.
In the Netherlands, Rivièra Maison opens the Polderhuis in Rotterdam, calling it an Experience Store. At the festive opening ceremony, Henk Teunissen receives the key to ‘his’ new house: the authentic Polderhuis dates back to 1930 and stands in the heart of the Alexandrium shopping centre. The house embodies the owner’s personal views on beauty and aesthetic priorities in interior design. A number of his own personal possessions were used in the décor. Following extensive renovations, a Rivièra Maison opens in the Frisian town of Sneek.
The chain’s overseas activities are flourishing. Rivièra Maison opens a store in the heart of the most prestigious shopping district in Helsinki, Finland’s capital city. In Germany, the second store opens in the trendy town of Düsseldorf, in the chic Königsallee shopping street.
On Dutch TV, Rivièra Maison engages in a collaboration with Life4You, a popular Sunday afternoon lifestyle show. The entire set is styled using Rivièra Maison furniture and accessories.
2011: Inspriring presence in The Hague & on social media
Rivièra Maison’s most comprehensive Flagship Store to date opens in a stately building on Hoogstraat in the historic Dutch city of The Hague. The store features three floors of inspiration and the first branded café and restaurant: Rivièra Maison East Coast Café Food & Drinks. The charming lunch café has an American beach and city look and includes an outdoor terrace overlooking the Buitenhof courtyard adjacent to the Parliament. Two new stores also open in the Netherlands, one in Nijmegen and one in Eindhoven.
Rivièra Maison fans are kept in the loop about the brand and updated on the latest news via social media on Facebook and YouTube. CEO Henk Teunissen (@RMHenk) and Styling Director Nico Tijsen (@Nico_Tijsen) launch Twitter accounts.
The collaboration with RTL4 broadcasting intensifies on Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden, a popular Dutch soap opera, as one of the show’s prominent families moves into a house with a complete Rivièra Maison interior.
2012: Foreign expansion & styling movies
Nico Tijsen launches a series of short Styling Movies. New interior design and styling tips are released every other Friday on rivieramaison.com, Facebook and YouTube.
An impressive number of new stores open abroad in 2012. There are two new stores in Turkey: one in Istanbul and one in the coastal town of Bodrum. The first Asian store opens in Seoul, South Korea, as well as a third store in Norway, with a second store in Istanbul opening later. Rivièra Maison now also has a store in Almaty, the biggest city in Kazakhstan. Although Rivièra Maison’s international growth has really taken off, its focus on the Netherlands continues to be strong. The red carpet is rolled out on the Marktplein square in Hoofddorp in October 2012 for the opening of the seventh Rivièra Maison Flagship Store.
2013: 65th anniversary & opening in Laren
While writing his New Year’s speech, Henk Teunissen realises that Rivièra Maison will hit the venerable age of 65 on 1 March 2013. In 1948, Henk’s parents opened Rivièra Bloemsierkunst on the Overtoom boulevard in Amsterdam. The rest is history! Go back to the start of this historic overview to see how the company grew.
Its success on television continues in 2013. In addition to continuing the collaboration with Life4You and the GTST soap, Rivièra Maison is also featured in the Kijk op Wonen home decoration show, with a special contribution from Nico Tijsen. During the All You Need is Love Christmas special on Christmas Eve 2012, the custom-designed sofa was shown on screen for the first time, displaying the text: All You Need is Love. In December, Rivièra Maison can be seen on TV on nearly every live talk show in the Netherlands. The studios of various prominent Dutch talk shows on RTL and SBS are transformed into Rivièra Maison Christmas styles.
The seventeenth store in the Netherlands and the eighth Flagship Store opens on Burgemeester van Nispen van Sevenaerstraat in the posh village of Laren.
In early November, a pop-up Christmas shop opens on Van Baerlestraat in Amsterdam, followed in December by the second store in Kazakhstan and the first store in Moscow. Expansion will be continuing for the foreseeable future.
2014: New brand campaign and stores opening
Rivièra Maison launches a new brand campaign: Home is where you can be you. The campaign expresses the deeper philosophy of the interior brand and its founder, Henk Teunissen. The new campaign is designed to reinforce its position in the Dutch market and support growth across Europe and Asia.
At the start of 2014, Nico Tijsen records a new series of Styling Clips: short, inspiring videos that offer a different twist on familiar concepts each time.
A gorgeous building covering over 1000 m2 in the centre of Maastricht becomes home to the latest Rivièra Maison Store.
A study by Q&A Research & Consultancy shows that not even one in ten chain stores manages to make their customers smile. Rivièra Maison makes the difference, achieving the highest scores in customer satisfaction.
Rivièra Maison expands its generous collection to include a new department dedicated entirely to gift packages and Christmas packages. These gift boxes are filled with unique, festive collection items and delicious foods. The Christmas packages are in Rivièra Maison’s distinctive atmosphere and style.
Rivièra Maison opens a second store in Hamburg in late May. The Gifts & Home Accessories Store, in the impressive Alstertal shopping centre, offers over 100 m² of accessories and gift ideas.
The first Rivièra Maison Cadeau in the Netherlands opens in downtown Amstelveen in September. It is the first in a series of new Cadeau Stores that will be opening soon.
At the start of October, Rivièra Maison launches a bath and body line! Rivièra Maison expands its generous collection to include a new line of skin care products. Pure Elements Nº 1 offers total skin care and that ultimate bliss of pampering yourself. A moment of sheer rest and relaxation with rich, luxurious products in a delightful and comfortable fragrance.
At the end of October, SBS6 launches a new daily dating soap on Dutch TV called Is This Love?. Rivièra Maison provides the entire décor for the villa. From the living room to the bedrooms, furniture and accessories from the latest collections are used in all the rooms to give the participants a warm and welcoming feeling.
