TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

Here in Indonesia, West Java, to be precise, is where the production of our earthenware accessories is carried out. Pottery is handcrafted here by local folk in their workshops using traditional methods. Using a blend of Javanese clay and sand, the models are formed on the wheel and carved. Sometimes the clay is compacted with an iron spindle press.

Then nature must do its work: the earthenware is dry-cured in the open air for about one week. Once sufficiently dried, the models are sanded smooth to remove all loose material and blemishes.

EACH PIECE IS UNIQUE

Then it's time for the baking process; all the pottery is stacked in brick kilns. These primitive ovens are bricked up by hand, after which the oven does its work for 16 hours at a temperature of 900 to 1000 °C. After firing, the bricked-in opening is broken open to remove the models. So a kiln is constructed for each new production run.  The hardened clay models are sanded once again to prepare a smooth surface to decorate. All this craftsmanship ensures each copy has its own, unique details; the charm of the Far East.
